In Alaska

I’ve been taking a break, using some of my frequent flier miles and Hilton points to chill for a few weeks in Alaska. What a place! It is so consistently open here, and all the landscape is so… big. Just what the doctor ordered for someone who has spent an exhausting year jumping between perspectives.

You know, if your work, like mine, asks you to simultaneously look at strategic and tactical issues, to build 30k foot roadmaps and under-the microscope processes, and scan end-to-end processes while specifying point-in-time controls, then there’s no avoiding this truth… after a while, you’re going to feel “jerked around.”

It’s important to schedule time to go to that perspective that feels most like “home” to you. This might mean putting on your reading glasses and immersing yourself in non-stop Sudoko until the outside world fades away. Or it might mean heading to the mountains like I have and staring at vistas until the inside world of bits-and-bytes-and corporate politics quits clamoring.

I waited a little too long this year for this vacation. But it’s OK now. How about you? Need  a few mental health days? Take some. Tell your boss Gwen said you should take a break.
